Religious Education

 

During this half term the children will be learning to…. Reconciliation

The children will be answering our Big Question: Is it easier to forgive or to say sorry? The children will be given opportunities to say if they think forgiving is easy or hard to do. They will listen to and retell one of Jesus’ stories about forgiveness and answer questions about the feelings of characters in the stories and their own feelings. The children will also be making simple links between the stories and Jesus’ teaching about forgiveness giving a reason for a link. We will focus on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the children will need to explain in detail the order and importance.

Natural Disasters 

This half term the children will be answering the following Big Question: How do natural disasters affect our planet? We will be learning about the different natural disasters and investigate the causes and effects. 

Vocabulary:

  • crust: outer layer of the earth.
  • mantle: the layer underneath the crust
  • inner core: underneath the mantle
  • outer core: the centre of the earth
  • tectonic plates: the parts of the Earth’s crust
  • fault lines: the edges of a tectonic plate
  • tsunami – a great wave that causes lots of damage

  • tectonic plates - the parts of the Earth’s crust

  • Ring of Fire – an area of the Pacific Ocean known for earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis

  • pyroclastic flow: clouds of hot ash, gas and rock that roll down the side of the volcano

  • ash cloud: small pieces of rock and glass that move in a cloud after an eruption

  • eruption: the force when a volcano releases lava, hot ash and gases

  • magma: molten (liquid) rock in the lower layer of the crust and top layer of the mantle

  • lava: the name for magma when it has erupted

  • crater: the opening of the volcano

  • conduit: the path for the magma to move to the crater

  • active volcano: a volcano that is likely to erupt

  • dormant volcano: a volcano that has not erupted for a long time but may erupt in the future

  • extinct volcano: a volcano that has not erupted for 10,000 years
