Excitement, Engagement and the Locality
Linked to our commitment to providing an ambitious curriculum is our aim to ensure that the curriculum is not ‘off the peg’ but adapted to suit the needs of our pupils. We believe that it is rich and engaging and a lived experience. We use the locality wherever appropriate as this provides our pupils with context. To this end, we ensure that all pupils experience at least 3 off site trips each year. We use our locality to London and its museums to our advantage. We ensure that our pupils travel on public transport to develop their awareness of safety in public places and the skill of negotiating routes e.g. on the London Underground. We have introduced The Tudors as one of our history topics due to our close proximity to Hampton Court Palace and the remains of Richmond Palace. In Heston Detectives (Year 4), we explore the history of our locality as well as its human geography and in London we explore the human geography of our wider locality e.g. economic activity in London. Experience days start or end each theme for our pupils and we make good use of external agencies; these enhance the vibrancy of our curriculum offer.
