Week Commencing 22nd January 2018

Literacy: 
We are continuing with our book - Shackleton's Journey. We will be looking at speeches and the use of emotive language. The children will also be writing a letter in role and a persuasive argument. 

Maths: 
We will be continuing with perimeter and area and then move on to finding unknown angles and 3D shapes. 

Topic: 
We will be learning about man-made and physical features in South America. 

RE:
​We have been learning about the story of Exodus and this week we will be sequencing the main events and then creating a newspaper report based on the story. 


PE: 
This week we will be learning about gymnastics and focusing on using our bodies to balance.

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

This week we are learning:

Literacy:
We are starting our new book Shakelton's Journey and the children will be researching about a crew member from the expedition as well recounting their favourite journey.

Maths:
We are looking at ratio and proportion before moving onto measurements and conversions.

Topic:
We are starting a new topic about South America and we will begin by looking at the different countries and their capitals within South America.

Science:

We are looking at the human circulatory system and focusing on the heart.


We are sorry to begin the year on a negative note, but we are very disappointed with the number of children who forgot to practice their spellings over the
Christmas holidays. As we did not provide any homework, we expected all of the children to have spent time over the holidays learning them.

Please be reminded that homework must be completed on time and to a high standard. Homework diaries must be signed every week.

Week Commencing 11th December

This week we are busy rehearsing for our Christmas performance, which will take place on the 12th of December at 13:30 and on the 13th December at 18:00. 

In RE we will be looking at Christmas traditions in England and compare with another country, Then we will write our final assessment piece for our topic From Advent to Christmas. 

In Topic, we are looking at social reform and focusing on child labor during the Victorian period. This will be our last lesson on this topic. 

In Science, we are looking at shadow puppets and learning about how they are created and why light is important. This will be the last lesson on learning about light. 

We look forward to seeing you all at our performance!

In Year 6 this week we are learning.....

Literacy:
This week, we will be planning, drafting and writing a suspense story using the features and skills taught in the previous weeks.
Grammar: Main and subordinate clauses.

Maths:
This week we are revisiting lessons on fractions, percentages and decimals. We will be moving onto worded problems and SAT's type questions.

RE:
The children have been set homework to research Christmas from another country (which is due in on 1st December).  We will be in the Church practising for our performance.

What we are learning in Year 6 this week...

Literacy
In literacy this week we will be continuing with suspense stories. We will be looking at the structure of stories such as sentence openers, clustering ideas, character profiles and then how to end a story.

Maths
In maths this week we will  be moving onto percentages and how to find percentages of amounts. 
We will then move onto how to convert fractions, decimals and percentages.

RE
We will be continuing with our new topic; Advent to Christmas, and looking at how Christians celebrate Christmas around the world.

This week we will begin our rehearsals for the KS2 Christmas Production.

What we are learning in Year 6 this week...

Literacy
This week we will be looking at features of a suspense story. Children will learn about the different features in depth, to prepare them to write their own stories during the Big Write.

Maths
In maths this week we are carrying on with fractions and are moving onto multiplying and dividing fractions.

ICT
This week in ICT we are looking at the importance of keeping our passwords and personal information secure.

What we are learning in Year 6 this week...

Literacy
We are moving away from Power of Reading this week and going back to basics. We are going to be doing some work looking at sentence type and structure, punctuation and finally tenses.
In grammar this week we will be looking at determiners.

Maths
In maths this week we are carrying on with fractions and moving onto adding and subtracting fractions.

RE
Last week we prayed the Lectio Divina and wrote about our thoughts from the meditation. This week we are going to look at the history and the reasons for the practice of Lectio Divina before trying to write our own version.

Science
In Science we will be moving onto shadows and how they are formed. We will be able to explain why shadows are the same shape as the object that casts them, We will use all this knowledge to create a shadow puppet play.

PE
In hockey this week we will be looking at how to pass the ball whilst moving and working on our shooting techniques.

What we are learning in Year 6 this week ...

Literacy
We will be finishing our unit on "The Princess' Blankets" this week with a big write. The children will be working on rewriting the story and changing one or two aspects. They will plan it first before writing a draft. They will then do their final, up-levelled piece on Friday.
In grammar we will be learning prepositions.

Maths
We are looking at common multiples, prime number and factors first before moving onto fractions. The children we be taught how to compare and order fractions, find the lowest common multiple, convert mixed to improper and finally find equivalent fractions using multiplication.

RE
This week we revisiting Advent and what it is before moving onto learning about another form of prayer; Lectio Divina; meaning divine or sacred reading.
This week we are going to look at how to prepare and pray the Lectio Divina. We will look at how to be ready in our hearts, minds and our bodies, for prayer.Topic
We are moving on the British Empire in the Victorian times this week and how it grew throughout this era. We will be looking at the various imports and exports that passed through Britain.

Science
In Science we will be looking at reflecting light; explaining how light is reflected, measure the angles of incidence and reflection. Using this understanding, the children will create a working periscope and explain how it allows us to see objects we wouldn't usually be able to see.


PE
In Hockey we will carry on learning about dribbling effectively and making sure we are holding the hockey stick correctly. We will then move onto passing the hockey ball effectively to our partner.

Week commencing 30th October

What we are learning in Year 6...

Literacy
In literacy this week we will be looking at advice and writing a letter to a family member giving them some advice. We will then continue reading the story and write a diary entry either as the Princess or the Musician about what has happened to us and how we feel.
As we finish the book we will do some role play and finally work on writing an alternative ending to the story.
In grammar we will be focussing on pronouns.

Maths
In maths this week we will continue with long division for the beginning of the week, eventually moving on to word problems in multiplication and division.
After that we will move onto negative numbers; ordering and sequencing them and learning the rules for adding and subtraction.

RE
In RE we will be moving onto our new topic looking at Advent to Christmas.

Topic
We will be carrying on with the Victorians this half term and moving onto transport and the different types of transport that were available or invented during the Victorian era. We will then look at the significance of the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution and how it helped to join cities together.

Science
We will be moving onto our new topic in Science for this half term; light. We will recap our understanding of light and then look at our eyes and how we can see things.

  PE
In PE we will be starting our new topic; hockey.
We will begin by looking at the equipment and how to use it and basic skills.

In Year 6 we are very lucky to have two student teachers who are going to be with Year 6 until Christmas; Miss Samra (6B), Miss Maycock (6A) so please say hello when you see them.
